Abstract

Throughout human history, two fundamental principles have governed the course of life: change and stagnation. In the domain of literature, change holds particular importance as it fosters growth, diversity, and relevance, while stagnation leads to the decline and rigidity of literary traditions. Urdu literature, like other literary traditions, has witnessed significant evolution, with many writers playing a pivotal role in embracing change through historical consciousness. Historical awareness not only enriches literary narratives but also allows writers to connect the past with contemporary realities, offering deeper insights into human experiences. Among contemporary Urdu writers, Irfān Jāvēd has emerged as a distinctive voice, integrating historical consciousness into his creative works. His sketches reflect a profound understanding of history, enabling him to highlight societal, cultural, and psychological dimensions with remarkable depth. In his celebrated book Ādmī, Jāvēd masterfully employs historical consciousness to delve into the complexities of human nature and the interplay of past and present. The narratives in Ādmī are not merely literary pieces but also reflections of historical transitions and their impact on individual and collective identities.
