Chitrāl, a two-district region in the extreme north of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was administratively bifurcated in 2018. Despite being part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chitrāl’s inhabitants exhibit a distinct and diverse cultural identity, differing significantly from the predominant Pashtun culture. Health is an invaluable blessing, as emphasized in the Qurʾān and Ḥadīth, where individuals are instructed to safeguard their well-being. Islamic teachings explicitly prohibit actions that harm one's health, including drug consumption.
Historically, drug abuse in Chitrāl remained relatively low compared to other parts of the country. However, in recent years, there has been a concerning surge in substance abuse, particularly among the youth. This study explores the underlying causes of this escalating trend, investigates the socio-economic and cultural factors contributing to drug abuse, and proposes effective strategies for its prevention and control.
By analyzing the key drivers of drug abuse in Chitrāl and outlining potential remedial measures, this research aims to provide actionable insights for policymakers, social institutions, and community leaders. If the findings and recommendations of this study are implemented effectively, the growing menace of drug abuse in Chitrāl can be significantly curtailed.
