Required Attributes of Politicians in the Light of Islamic Teachings: An Analytical Study

Abstract

This study examines the essential personal and collective qualities required for political leadership in the light of Islamic teachings. Drawing upon the Qurʾān, authentic Prophetic traditions, and the works of classical Muslim scholars, the research presents a comprehensive framework of ethical and administrative principles that characterize an ideal pWWolitical leader. Employing a qualitative and analytical methodology, the study explores the moral foundations of Islamic governance and their relevance to contemporary political thought. The research identifies key leadership qualities, including taqwā, knowledge, justice, sincerity, patience, wisdom, accountability, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to public welfare. It further examines fundamental principles of Islamic governance, such as merit-based appointments, consultation, impartiality, rejection of tribalism and group bias, openness to constructive criticism, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of society. These principles are analyzed through relevant Qurʾānic verses and Prophetic guidance, demonstrating their significance in establishing a just and stable political order. To illustrate the practical application of these ideals, the study draws upon historical examples from the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, with particular emphasis on the administrative practices of Caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA). The findings suggest that Islamic political thought offers a balanced, ethical, and sustainable model of governance that integrates moral integrity with administrative competence. The study concludes that these enduring principles provide valuable guidance for addressing contemporary challenges in political leadership, public administration, and good governance.
