Autobiography, as a literary genre, has gained significant prominence in Urdu literature in the 21st century, offering profound insights into personal narratives and cultural dynamics. This paper reviews some of the most important autobiographies in modern Urdu literature, highlighting their unique styles, thematic richness, and contributions to the genre. Rasheed Amjad’s autobiographical works stand out for their traditional approach, reflecting deep connections with heritage and civilization, and for their edifying and instructive tone. Ali Muhammad Siddiqui’s contributions emphasize authenticity and coherence, setting a benchmark for organized and credible autobiographical writing. Saadat Hasan Manto’s controversial yet compelling autobiographical pieces, shaped by accusations of obscenity and his reflective responses, underscore the provocative and transformative potential of the genre. Similarly, Javed Iqbal’s autobiography provides invaluable insights into his life and legacy, gaining additional significance due to his status as Allama Iqbal’s son, thereby blending personal narrative with national history. Ahmed Basheer’s autobiographical work, presented in the form of a biographical novel, captivates readers with its innovative narrative style and emotional depth.
