Wusūḵht is a distinctive genre of Urdu poetry that captures the emotions of lovers confronting the unfaithfulness and oppressive attitudes of their beloveds. Traditionally, Urdu poetry often glorifies the themes of unrequited love and the lover’s acceptance of pain as a noble act. However, Wusūḵht deviates from this norm by offering a bold and candid response to emotional neglect and betrayal. When the beloved’s indifference surpasses tolerable limits, the lover discards their usual shyness and humility choosing instead to articulate their grievances with raw honesty.
This article examines the origins, evolution, and thematic nuances of Wusūḵht in Urdu literature. It explores how this genre carved a unique identity within Urdu poetry, distinct from the prevalent romantic and mystical traditions. Furthermore, prominent examples of Wusūḵht by renowned poets such as Ḥaidar ʿAlī Ātish, Momīn Khān Momīn and Mīr Taqī Mīr are discussed to illustrate its stylistic and emotional depth. By analyzing these works, the study sheds light on how Wusūḵht serves as a medium for expressing defiance and reclaiming agency in the face of emotional exploitation.
