Abstract

Education plays a fundamental role in the intellectual, moral, social, and spiritual development of individuals and the progress of society. In Islam, education is not confined to the acquisition of knowledge; rather, it is a comprehensive process aimed at character building, ethical development, social responsibility, and the promotion of justice. The Sīrah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provides a practical and comprehensive model for establishing an educational system that integrates religious guidance with individual and collective welfare. This study examines the educational responsibilities of the state in the light of the Prophetic Sīrah, focusing on the principles, objectives, and institutional arrangements that contributed to the development of an enlightened and morally responsible society. It explores the role of the state in promoting access to education, disseminating knowledge, developing ethical values, training individuals for social responsibilities, and ensuring that educational opportunities contribute to the welfare of the wider community. Particular attention is given to the educational initiatives undertaken during the Prophetic era, including the establishment of the mosque as a centre of learning, the development of the Ṣuffah as an educational institution, the teaching of the Qur’an, and the training of individuals in religious and practical affairs. The study adopts a qualitative, descriptive, and analytical approach based on the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, and relevant literature on the Sīrah. It argues that the Prophetic model offers enduring principles for an educational system grounded in knowledge, character formation, equality, justice, and public welfare. The study concludes that incorporating these principles into contemporary educational policy can help develop a balanced system that addresses the intellectual, moral, and social needs of individuals while contributing to the sustainable progress of society.
